Once settled by the Vikings, Coniston in the south west of
the Lake District has much to offer the visitor with the
Coppermines Valley and The Old Man for walkers and Grizedale Forest has numerous
marked tracks for the cyclist.

The
Gondola, a Victorian Steam Yacht
which cruises the lake calls at Brantwood during the
summer, originating from Coniston where their is a New Museum to Ruskin.

The local brew is a Bluebird Bitter named
after the boat in which Donald Campbell was killed trying to break the Water
Speed Record. The boat was recently raised from the depths of the lake in
preparation for a new attempt on the record in 2005.

Brantwood the Home of John Ruskin
1819 - 1900 can claim to be a past centre of International literary and artistic
intellectuals with Tolstoy, Gandhi, Marcel Proust and Frank L. Wright having
visited. For thirty years of his life Ruskin a Victorian
Artist & Philosopher lived and worked around Coniston.
The House on the lake side is open all year to view with
Ruskin's paintings and personal effects along with the gardens and Estate
available for woodland walks.
